Photography Style Tips for Everyone

For the family

DRESS IT UP

There’s no such thing as “too dressed up” for family portraits! Dress to impress, make your photos pop, and have fun turning heads while you’re at it.

AVOID "MATCHY-MATCHY"

Matching everyone head-to-toe is tempting, but the best photos come from coordinating, not overdoing it. Keep no more than two people in the same color or print, and let the focus shine on YOU!

PICK 2 OR 3 COLORS

Skip matching everyone head-to-toe—pick two or three colors that look great together! Mixing in prints, textures, and shades makes your photos pop and keeps your outfits fun and stylis

GO FOR THE DRESS

I always encourage women to lean toward a dressy look rather than casual, especially for family portraits. Dresses and skirts are my go-to favorites—they flatter every body type and always look beautiful in photos!

Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing in photos—they add movement and a little extra magic to your images. Fabrics like chiffon or tulle are perfect for this. And if you want a little boost, heels can help elongate your legs and add a flattering finishing touch!

STATEMENT ACCESSORIES

Once you’ve found the perfect dress, think about accessories! A statement necklace or bold earrings can really pull your look together and add some fun, vibrant details to your photos.

TREAT YOURSELF

Think of this as your “treat yourself” moment! Get your nails, hair, and makeup done professionally—it’ll make you feel gorgeous and give your portraits that extra pop on camera. Because yes, you deserve it!

KEEP IT DRESSY

Don’t forget about the men! Dressing them to complement the ladies always looks great—think fitted pants or slacks with closed-toe shoes. Save the shorts, sandals, and baggy pants for another day, and you’ll have a clean, polished look that photographs beautifully.

BRING IN LAYERS

For men, layers like blazers, sweaters, or vests always photograph beautifully—they add dimension and a sleek, polished look, even if it’s a little warm. It might feel a bit extra at first, but I promise, the final photos are totally worth it!

DON'T FORGET DETAILS

Men can absolutely add style too! Ties, bowties, colorful socks, suspenders, and watches are all great touches. These little details may be small, but they add personality and a classy pop that really makes your photos shine.

DRESSY OVER CASUAL

When it comes to family portraits, I always suggest dressing the little ones in something a bit dressier than their everyday play clothes. It instantly makes your photos look extra special!

And honestly—there’s no such thing as “too dressed up” for your session, so have fun with it and get a little fancy!

THINK LIKE ADULTS

Many adult style tips work for kids too—they’re basically little adults anyway! Dresses and accessories are perfect for girls (bonus points for a flower crown or bow), and layers plus cute details like suspenders or a bowtie make boys’ outfits extra adorable.
