Guiding kids through the session

Two girls making silly faces outdoors on a sunny day.

STAY FLEXIBLE

When it comes to photographing children, the experience is all about flexibility.
Little ones are wonderfully unpredictable, and that’s exactly what makes their images so full of life. I move with their energy—whether that means running, playing, getting a little silly, or slowing down when they need comfort. If they want to be held instead of standing on their own, we simply adjust. Their safety and ease always come first.

Throughout the session, I pay close attention to their cues so we can photograph them in the most natural, flattering light and capture images that feel genuine, joyful, and true to who they are.

MAKE IT FUN

This one’s a big one — keeping your family session fun is the heart of the experience.
Play is the secret to those genuine smiles you love. Sometimes that looks like me making silly sounds, singing off-key, or doing a goofy dance behind the camera. Other times, it’s you jumping into a quick game of peek-a-boo or sparking a little tickle attack.

Whatever brings out the sweet giggles, relaxed shoulders, and real connection — that’s exactly what we’ll follow. The more fun your family is having, the more natural and heartfelt your images become.

BRING BRIBES

And when all else fails… bribes to the rescue!
A little incentive can work wonders during a photo session. Feel free to bring along a few tiny treats — gummies, mini candies, or any simple favorite. If we need to pause for a quick treat break to reset and lift the mood, we absolutely will.

A happy kid is a cooperative kid — and happy kids always make for the sweetest, most genuine photos.

Tips for a Smooth & Happy Kids’ Session

  • Make sure kids are rested and fed before the session.
  • Prepare them in advance for what to expect.
  • Bring water and a small snack (avoid anything sticky or messy).
  • Frame the session as a little adventure — excitement goes a long way!
  • Let them be themselves. Genuine smiles come from play, not perfection.
  • Cooperation is our goal, but fun is the priority — this isn’t the time for lessons.
  • If we need breaks, we will take breaks.
  • If they’re shy at first, that’s completely okay — we ease in gently and patiently.

By keeping things light, playful, and flexible, we create an experience where

kids feel comfortable and the images reflect their true personalities.
